What is cashmere?

Cashmere is a type of wool made from the fine, downy undercoat of cashmere goats. The fiber is softer, finer, and loftier than sheep’s wool, and offers three times the insulating properties — so it’s just as warm and cozy. Cashmere can be knit or woven into a variety of fabrics or blended with other materials, making it ideal for everything from blankets and bedding to clothing and accessories.

Benefits of Garnet Hill Cashmere

Ethically sourced

Traceable to Inner Mongolian family farms, our partners raise only purebred goats, which they treat with the utmost kindness. Their fibers are carefully collected once a year in a standardized process that ensures gentle, humane treatment of the animals.

Environmentally conscious

Our partners prioritize sustainability at every step of the production process. Not only do they limit the size of herds on the land to reduce impact, they also have solar-powered facilities, use circular water-management systems, and employ eco-friendly practices to minimize waste.

Comfortably warm

Cashmere’s fine, lofty fibers mean the material is silky-soft to the touch and is surprisingly lightweight for the warmth it offers. Our cashmere clothing and accessories are thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted to be the softest, coziest around.

Field to fiber, there is care and kindness in every design.

Made from the finest, downy undercoat of cashmere goats, our cashmere is sourced exclusively and ethically from family farms in Inner Mongolia. The cashmere fibers are gathered by herders and then spun into two-ply yarns to provide lightweight warmth with superior durability and luxurious softness for years.

SFA certification

SFA certification ensures the cashmere in an item is produced in a way that adheres to high animal welfare standards and is traced through the supply chain from herders to the final product.

Cashmere FAQs

Wondering whether cashmere is worth the investment? The answer is indisputably yes. Explore answers to common questions and put your worries to rest.

Is cashmere itchy?

No: Pure, high-quality cashmere is not itchy, thanks to the material’s softer, finer, and longer fibers. But while it is considered hypoallergenic, this natural fiber can cause irritation for some; if you are sensitive to wool, take care when choosing cashmere clothing or layer your cashmere over other pieces for optimal comfort.

Is cashmere warm?

Yes: Cashmere’s long, lofty fibers regululate body temperature and naturally wicks moisture offering exceptional warmth in spite of their light weight.

Is cashmere better than wool?

Cashmere is just as warm and insulating as wool, but it’s a bit lighter weight. The material is hypoallergenic, and its long, fine fibers are even softer than sheep’s wool.

Does cashmere shrink?

Cashmere can shrink when exposed to heat, whether in the washing machine or in the dryer. For the best results, carefully follow the care instructions attached to your product, which likely include handwashing in cold water and air-drying away from heat or direct sunlight.

Does all cashmere pill as you wear it?

The long-lofty fibers do have a tendency to loosen from natural wear, as a result, they may form little balls or pills. Pilling also happens from friction caused by seatbelts or bag straps rubbing against the fibers. However, cashmere is easy to care for using a sweater stone made from pumice or a sweater comb.
